On behalf of Care Caf茅, Happy Social Work Month!
On Thursday, March 17, 2022, Care Caf茅 celebrated Social Work Month with CUNY Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn, NY at their 15th Annual Social Work Conference. The theme of this year鈥檚 conference was 鈥淭he Time Is Right for Social Work in Social Justice!鈥
Led by Dr. Waleek Boone, student life specialist, attendees were engaged by an esteemed panel of experts in social justice advocacy and research across a broad spectrum. Guests included keynote speaker Lurie Daniel Favors, Esq, activist and racial justice attorney; Andre Ward, associate vice president of the David Rothenberg Center for Public Policy; Dr. Diandra Poe, founder of the Poe Impact Center and sexual assault and advocacy advocate; and Dr. Fabien Snowden, assistant professor and field education director with the social work department.
Important dialogue in the areas of criminal justice, veteran services, education, health equity and law were highlighted along with the intersectionality of race, class and gender throughout this narrative. The conference concluded leaving us with critical reflections and feelings of hope and pride as we continue to move forward with serving our communities most effectively.
Special recognitions were given to program pioneers and students for their contributions to the enrichment of college, specifically Dr. Patricia Ramsey, recognized as the first woman president of Medgar Evers College, and Dr. Eda Harris-Hastick and Dr. Elaine Reid as the founders of the social work program at Medgar Evers College.
Care Caf茅 thanks Dr. Boone for his tireless efforts with addressing food insecurity across his campus and community through the facilitation of the Transition Academy and for inviting YU Care Caf茅 to participate in this year鈥檚 conference. Kim Moore, director of Care Caf茅, was called upon to lead the conference attendees with a social work pledge.
Additionally, Care Caf茅 would like to recognize fellow Wurzweiler student Rebecca Cenatus (Ph.D. candidate) for hosting the conference as she led a lively, joyous program for all.
Special thanks to Care Caf茅 interns Tina T., Allysha B., and Olivia B. for their support.
