Carroll is a biochemistry major in the research group of Dr. Rajalakshmi Viswanathan, co-chair of the Department of Chemistry and his Honors thesis mentor. "I am incredibly grateful to Professor Viswanathan for her mentorship and guidance and for welcoming me into her lab from my very first week at YU," said Carroll. He is also thankful to Drs. Irina Catrina, Josefa Steinhauer, Fred Sugarman, and William Stenhouse, 鈥渨ithout whom,鈥 he says, 鈥淚 would not have won this scholarship.鈥 The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by the United States Congress in 1986 to encourage research in the STEM fields by outstanding college sophomores and juniors. Of the estimated 5,000 students who applied this year, only 413 were named Goldwater Scholars, chosen for their career objectives, commitment and potential to make significant professional contributions to their field of study. Carroll plans to apply to MD/PhD programs in computation biology and bioinformatics. As a member of Dr. Viswanathan's research group, he has contributed to research developing computational methods for predicting the interfaces between proteins, particularly those between antigens and antibodies. "Moshe is a self-motivated and independent learner who is passionate about research and always takes the initiative to make progress with the project," said Dr. Viswanathan. "I have been fortunate to work with Moshe and consider him one of the most talented undergraduate students I have had the opportunity to work with at YU." Dr. Eliezer Schnall, director of the Honors program, is also proud of Carroll鈥檚 impressive accomplishment, adding, "We sincerely congratulate Moshe for this great achievement," he said. "It is well-deserved and great to see the hard work of one of our honors students recognized with such a prestigious award."
